NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS

Harriette Walters, Master Director
Greater Nassau Chorus

Harriette Walters joined The Greater Nassau Chorus (GNC) singing baritone in 1977. Having grown up in a musical environment, with minimal formal musical training, her natural abilities became apparent early in her Sweet Adelines career. Shortly after joining GNC she was appointed Assistant Director, and quickly emerged as a musical leader. In 1984 when GNC was in search of a new director, Harriette became the obvious choice. Since that time, Harriette has not only directed the chorus musically, but has led GNC toward its vision of excellence. Since Harriette’s directorial debut in 1984, GNC has earned a medal each year in the Greater New York Region's annual competition. Winning first place at the Regional level earns each region's chorus the privilege of competing at the International level, which GNC has achieved nine times under Harriette's direction. Most recently, Greater Nassau Chorus earned a 4th place medal at the 63rd Annual Sweet Adelines International Competition and Convention in Nashville, Tennessee-their best finish to date!

In addition to her impressive record as a director, Harriette is an accomplished quartet singer. She is currently singing baritone in the quartet, a.k.a, who won 1st place Regional medals in 2008 and 2009. They competed at Sweet Adelines International Quartet Competitions in Honolulu, Hawaii in November, 2008 and in Nashville, Tennessee in October, 2009. She also competed on the International stage with two other quartets: Moondance in 2001 and 2003 and Promises, Promises in 1987, 1988, and 1989.

As a Certified International Faculty Member of Sweet Adelines International(http://www.sweetadelineintl.org/walters.cfm), Harriette maintains a busy coaching schedule, assisting barbershop choruses and quartets in the United States and abroad. Her commitment to helping other singers and directors has prompted her to hold many offices within Sweet Adelines including Moderator, Director Education Coordinators and her current appointed position on the International Board of Directors. She teaches the barbershop craft at Regional educational seminars, and she works with the Young Women in Harmony singers at local schools. Harriette's expertise is in demand and her calendar is always full. Did we mention that she holds a management position at an insurance company?
